SUMMER, MENDOCINO COAST, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

I painted this piece on location (en plein air) while staying at Westport on the Mendocino coast. At Summer Solstice there was lots of sun mixed with occasional smoke from the many California fires last year. Luckily this day was only slightly hazy, allowing for the warm colors of the trees and grasses to come through. The painting is 9" x 12" on canvas covered panel. SOLD

"At the Sherry-Netherland" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I just love umbrellas in New York. And rain, which makes the streets so reflective and interesting. This is in front of the historic Sherry-Netherland building at 781 Fifth Avenue (at 59th Street), right across from the Plaza Hotel and Central Park. The upstairs window, just above the umbrellas, is the apartment I was lucky enough to occupy for two weeks last summer. A beautiful spot--I wish I was there right now! I don't suppose the Sherry has an artist-in-residence program?

Ah well. This is 5 x 7 inch oil on board. 1/2 thick board with dovetail slots in back to allow it to be hung on a nail with no additional hardware, unframed, if you prefer. The sides are painted black. Signed on the back.

Click here to bid. Oh, and by the way, I'm adding this one to my growing collection of New York City notecards, all available from our Zazzle store.

Nov 2009 Press Release: Lost Coast Daily Painters Release 2010 Calendar, Host Holiday Sale

Last spring, a group of Humboldt County painters joined together to sell small works online through their blog, Lost Coast Daily Painters. The effort proved more successful than they could have imagined: collectively, they’ve sold over 150 paintings in six months. The group continues to attract new members: painters Alicia Tredway, Terry Oats, and Steve Porter have joined this month. Now they’re celebrating with the release of a 2010 calendar of Humboldt County scenes, and a holiday sale at Kathy O’Leary’s studio at 208 C Street in Eureka on December 5 for Arts Alive.

The calendar features paintings by O’Leary, Linda Mitchell, Rachel Schlueter, and Amy Stewart. Scenes include Indian Island, the Ferndale racetrack, and the AA bar. Some of the images are already part of Humboldt’s past. “As we were putting it together, we realized that already some of the places we painted had changed,” Mitchell said. “I went to O-H’s the night it closed to get one last painting. We also included Rachel’s painting of Gepetto’s in Eureka, and Amy’s painting of the pulp mill when it was still operating.”

In keeping with the artists’ use of technology to sell art online, the calendars can be ordered online through Zazzle.com. “The nice thing about Zazzle is that it lets us design a high-quality calendar without having to invest thousands of dollars in up-front printing costs,” said Schlueter. “We’re also designing notecards and even T-shirts, all of which are printed only when someone orders them. None of this was possible even a few years ago.”

Samples of the calendars will be on display at the Lost Coast Daily Painters Holiday Sale at Kathy O’Leary’s C Street studio, where the artists will also offer small paintings for sale at affordable prices. “We’re even offering gift wrapping and shipping,” O’Leary said. “We want to make it very easy to get some holiday shopping done.” The sale starts at 5 pm on Saturday, December 5 and continues throughout the evening for Arts Alive.

Visit lostcoastdailypainters.blogspot.com to see new work by each artist, and visit the Zazzle store at www.zazzle.com/lostcoast.

"8th Street, Eureka" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

This is a scene I walk past almost every day--a cluster of Victorians and Craftsman bungalows near my house. The sun sets behind that palm tree, so there's always pretty light hitting those buildings. Eureka has a lot of nice architecture, always in various states of repair or disrepair, which makes for interesting subject matter. I should really do more of it.

This is 8 x 10 inch oil on board, and it's the 1/2 inch thick panel with dovetail slots in the back so it can be hung, unframed, on a nail with no extra hardware. The sides are painted black.

ANASAZI POT WITH PEARS, oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

This 8 x 8 oil painting (on canvas covered panel) is of one of my favorite still life objects, pears. I love their simple shape and the way light hits them. My often used striped pot, is an Anasazi replica. I thought the shape and neutral colors would compliment the gold of the pears. SOLD

VINEYARD PALM IN LATE LIGHT, oil painting by Kathy O'Leary

I love palm trees, and finding one with another of my favorite subjects, vineyards, was particularly fun. What caught my attention was the light, and I kept my brush strokes loose here to emphasize where the light fell and the shapes it created. This painting is 8 x 10, on canvas covered panel. SOLD

"Lexington and 65th" by Amy Stewart -- SOLD

A sunny afternoon on Lexington Avenue. I stood and took pictures on this street corner for the longest time, waiting for exactly the right combination of cars to drive by. It was the jumble of bright awnings in the distance that I really loved, but it needed just the right yellow cab to really make it work.

This is 8 x 10 inch oil on board. The board is 1/2 in thick with dovetail slots on the back so you can hang it on a nail with no additional hardware. The sides are painted black.

'Spanky at Rest' oil by Rachel K Schlueter, $75.00

Oil on 6"x6" panel, alla prima- meaning the painting was completed in one pass inferring that the execution is confident, passionate and spontaneous and possibly reckless. This is another painting from my recent trip to the Feather River Land Trust paint out in Northeastern California.
