Yesterday a few of us went up to Bald Hills Road where the lupine were blooming in mass, blanketing the hill sides, the fragrance was intoxicating.

Painted en plein air (on location) this past Sunday, its a scene from the oak and meadow region above Redwood National Park along California's far north coast. The lupines are profuse this year, supposedly a one in 50 year event. It was heaven painting among the lilac colored lupine with bees buzzing everywhere, surrounded by the sweet perfume of the flowers. SOLD

I've done a series of paintings of my dearly departed Rhode Island Red, Eleanor. In the four years we've had chickens, she's the first one we've lost. As a tribute to her, I did a portrait of her on my chicken coop--and I did several smaller portraits first to practice. Over the next few weeks, I'll post those portraits here. The poses are very similar, but they're all different sizes and slightly different backgrounds.

I photographed this mare on my second trip to Mongolia in 2006. Takhi, or Przewalski's horse, are the only surviving species of true wild horse. She was with a small harem group, all grazing in the morning sun. These spectacular trees are so tall, I've learned that evoking the feel of a Redwood forest is more about recording the light and what grows around these giants than trying to show them from top to bottom. Westport is a tiny town perched on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean, located around 40 minutes north of Mendocino. I spent a week in Westport last summer, painting with friends. While we were there, several fires broke out around us, one just over the hill in back of the house. While it led to some tense moments, we also got to see golden, eerily beautiful skies and landscapes.

Here's another one from my 2006 painting trip to Paris. It's painted from a photo I took from the back of the Batobus, a water taxi that ferries people up and down the Seine. I think it's in the vicinity of Notre Dame.
