This is my last post for the blog. I consider it an honor to have collaborated with all the wonderful artists of Lost Coast Daily Painters past and present. A special thanks also to all those who have collected my work. This piece will be in the landscape show at Morris Graves Museum May 3rd through June 24th chaired by Alan Sanborn. Our area is rich with wild life. As I paint out in the landscape, it's just a matter of time before

something shows up. In this case, and egret.

In wintertime, a variety of wild berries emerge, shrubbery intensifies with color and

the ocean appears off in the distance as a crisp Nile Blue.

I painted from life (plein air) with oils on a 12x 20'' lead primed white prepared panel.

It's not hard to find a beautiful vantage point to paint from in Loleta California. The landscape is so expansive and the colors of the fields and mountains so harmonious, the problem is often, how do I choose what beauty to fit in and what to leave out! By focusing on these foreground trees, this painting has a sense of depth in that the distant farm buildings show up as tiny dots comparatively.

able to work on a portrait. I accomplished a likeness yet if there had been more time

I'd have painted more of her arm and included her shirt. That session was many years ago.

Now I like the

unconventional appearance of this portrait and the arm in particular because it reveals

This was the first of two paintings that I made alongside John Crater out in Blue Lake last month. We were making great progress, until the North Wind picked up and forced us to retreat to a new vantage behind the shelter of trees. I liked this piece, because I was up high on a bank looking down on the river, the fall colors were really, played off of the blue river. It was so cold that day, I thought I might be done painting landscapes for the winter. Turns out, since then I have been out about 20 times and not seen a wind nearly as frigid....

Every time I travel up to Eureka I see this scene and want to paint it. The bridge is on Hwy 101 and is a long sweeping curve, too dangerous to walk out on to paint or take photos. So I had to be a passenger in order to get some decent photos. I tried to find a way down to the river to get more of the whole panorama but locked gates kept me out. I started this little sketch with my left hand as I was recuperating from carpel tunnel surgery on my right, and yes I’m right handed. I was surprised how my untrained hand was able to put color down in a somewhat focused manner. But then I cheated and finished it off with my right hand. This is a portrait I created, of my Brother in Law Randy Stadler. He posed twice during Christmas vacation over the course of two evenings after our daughters had gone to sleep. He is a master of the Sudoku, as well as a fan of the greatest Beatle ever, John Lennon, as evidenced by his t-shirt.

There were so many challenges in this piece that were new to me. The t-shirt portrait, the reflected scene in the window, the face turned away from the viewer and the glasses. I just kept putting paint down and hoping for the best. As a teacher friend of mine Josh Arbaugh is fond of saying.... "It's time to step out of the comfort zone, and into the learning zone!"

John Crater and I tried to escape the coastal fog by heading into Blue Lake for some paintings of the Mad River. Instead of the fog, we were accompanied by a frigid North Wind. John loaned me his fingerless gloves and we joked of getting hypothermia! That day the fall earth tones were uniformly muted. It was a challenge make the space believable and the canvas interesting for me. But no day spent outside painting is a wasted day!

Mike Woods is an artist my husband and I have enjoyed getting to know. In the past year or so, Mike has been experimenting with his work by breaking down the composition of his paintings into luminous blocks of color.

My husband Jim posed under my studio sky light in 1999.He's obviously thinking about something pretty strongly, possibly a painting he was working on. I painted in oils on canvas paper then mounted it on board. I like canvas paper because it doesn't absorb the oil. The paint stays on top which leaves the colors with their original vibrancy. This image is a detail of the painting, there's more background and a bit more of his torso in the actual work. This portion measures 20x18, the painting measures 24x20 in it's entirety.

This was the first painting I made of Chelsea at a figure group. It was a lot of fun painting her red dress. I rarely do figurative portraits, but I had just gotten some small brushes I wanted to play with and the dress she showed up in was quite special. So I had to give it a try!

This is the second of two portraits I created at a figure group that was meeting Fran Kuta's studio. I was playing around with saturating the colors to create bold form and strong shadows. It was really fun to paint in with these thick brush strokes and I was surprised by the result!

Kathleen Biggar by Theresa Oats

Kathleen and I became friends when we ride shared back and forth to College of the Redwoods.

We were in the same water color class taught by Bob Benson. Kathleen was easy going and had a terrific wit, she saw humor in even the most mundane events. We decided to paint portraits of each other in the act of painting each other. It surprised me to see this very intense serious side of Kathleen as she worked away, never saying a word. Her demeanor belied her carefree brushy style I'd seen in class. That said, her later work and self portraits show this side to her through the use of a large format and expressive brushwork.

Kathleen started feeling less energetic and didn't have a car. I offered to take her around to see all the local shows. She appeared pretty lethargic the whole time. Our last stop was the Cody Gallery. She perked up while viewing Linda Mitchell's work. As we left the premises she expressed admiration for Linda's work and how she enjoyed seeing it, even thanking me for bringing her there. Several months later in that year of 2007 Kathleen died of a heart attack. I was told by her neighbor, that Kathleen's family has her body of work.

Alicia and I were down in Aptos visiting fellow artists Dee and Laura Boyles a few years ago. We were out scouting early one morning down near Moss Landing heading toward Elkhorn Slough when we came around a bend and this sight stopped me. I stopped along the road headed out from Fortuna to route 36. When I saw the morning light hitting the grass in this field as the cows grazed. Looked just like something you'd see in a painting!

When I was a kid living in L.A., occasionally we would take a long drive up to Pismo Beach. Mind you, this is back in the 40's. The little town of Pismo Beach had a gas station, small market and a couple of clam shacks that you could get fresh clams, chowder etc. That's the main reason my dad would take that long drive, fresh clams. The place has sure changed. That whole area is practically all city now. I liked it better when there was just a couple of clam shacks there. My husband Jim is the love of my life and a subject for painting I never tire of. Jim is

sitting by the window in my previous studio, wearing a sweater I gave him for Christmas.

His ear is not actually pierced. He described

an interesting dream that occurred to him in the night, a wonderful and spiritual

dream. One of the details was a cobalt blue earring in his left ear.

I painted on 18x14 inch stretched linen with oils over a stretch of winter days in 1995.

Here in Southern Humboldt, we don't get the bright reds and orange foliage like they get in the Northeast. But on the other hand, we do get bright yellows turning to orange and purples that are wonder to see, yet a challenge to paint. This is my favorite time of the year. I was driving through the Arcata Bottoms last week when I became attracted to the bright green of the grasses in the cattle fields. While composing the image, the repeating rhythm of the fences jumped out at me. So I thought it might be worth experimenting with them.

This painting was in an exhibit years ago and my husband was so happy it hadn't been purchased I gave it him as a gift.

I painted this when we worked in the 'C' Street studio building in a north light window.

It was the month of a rainy cold January. The coral petals of the amaryllis lent a tropical

touch to my studio and a translucent rich color palette for my brush and paint to emulate as I worked wet into wet oil paint.

Three Roses by Theresa Oats

'Three Roses' is one of several of my paintings of flowers that will be featured in this year's First Street Holiday Invitational(a group show) which opens on November 28 to December 23. This annual exhibit is a fundraiser for Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery.

A public reception will be held on December 3rd in conjunction with Eureka Main Street's

Arts Alive! and of course everyone is welcome.

I painted these roses in oil on location on a 10x5 inch canvas that was stretched and primed by a dear friend of my husband and I, Ingrid Nickelsen, a superb artist who passed away in 2005.

The roses are from a bush that grows up the outside wall of our studio - a few are still opening.

Blue Victorian in Arcata Bottoms

Lately I have been hooked on landscape painting! Especially making these small paintings (5" x 7" - 13cm x 18cm). There is something about seeing the whole painting all at once that simplifies the process for me. Plus it is really fun to line them up at the end of the day and look at them together.

Bank of the Van Dusen

I have been spending time after work scouting the Fortuna area for painting spots. I stood under the 101 bridge that spans the Van Dusen River to paint this view. The overcast day inspired a composition in greys.

I met with John Crater at his studio on a rainy day last week. We decided to set up a still life instead of going out to paint the landscape. We were looking at a Richard Schmid painting on his computer screen as we worked for ideas. I focused on using more variety in my brush work as I know Schmid does. I was also trying to paint really thin for mu initial layer so that I could come in thicker on the next layers with out it getting hard to control. I think the painting feels more alive then my typical ones because of these approaches.
