"Leeks"--by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I think that every painter has some subject that is like comfort food for them--it's the thing that always works. The thing you can always go back to and know that you will be able to pull it off, no matter what. It's nice to have something like that--if you've had a bad streak, going back to the most familiar, easy, beautiful subject matter you know can really help you get your groove back.

For a long time I thought my comfort food subject was apples, but you know what? It isn't. It's onions. Anything in the allium family. Onions, leeks, garlic, whatever. I just love them. The colors are so interesting, the shapes are lovely, and they are just a delight to paint. And eat.

So--here is a painting of leeks from the farmer's market that I am so happy with. I hope you like it, too. This is an 8 x 10 oil on 1/2 inch board, with sides painted black and slots on the back to make it easy to hang unframed if you prefer. Here's a photo of what the back looks like:

We had a great time at our holiday art sale this weekend. Thanks to all of you who showed up to tell us that you follow the blog. It was great to meet you in person--and to send you home with a painting! For those of you who weren't able to make it, I've put a whole bunch of paintings up on eBay at a very recession-friendly Buy It Now price with free shipping. Check it out here.

We've also been busy creating more notecards, t-shirts, and other cool stuff on Zazzle. Rachel's cat notecards sold out at our holiday sale, but the beauty of Zazzle is that they can always print more. Visit our Zazzle shop here to see the 2010 calendar and other swag.

  1. I like the cute little rootlets! I'll give the alliums cuteness, but I think they are stinky. I admit if I painted I'd be tempted by the sheer variety as well.

Was in the bookstore yesterday and looked around for any Zazzle stuff but yeah - all gone. Rachel's cards are adorable though! Very tempting.

  2. Great painting Amy! I've been picking beautiful leeks in my own garden for months and I find that very comforting.
