You know, for the price of two drinks, I sure did get a lot of material out of one trip to the Sazerac Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. The bar was almost empty that day, so I just kept changing barstools and photographing the bottles as I went.

"New York Fruit Stand" by Amy Stewart--$50

Fruit stands are great fun to paint. And in this case, I managed to get just the right kind of figure in the scene--a guy standing around waiting for someone to buy his wares. This particular stand, if you're curious, was somewhere on Seventh Ave, in the forties, I believe.

"Seventh Avenue, New York" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

Every now and then, a painting is just so much fun to paint. I particularly love this one because, for some mysterious reason, it was just enormously entertaining to do. It may have had something to do with the fact that I was painting in New York, and that after I finished it I washed my hands and stepped outside to go check out the most incredible little bar, making for a perfect New York night. And no, I'm not telling you the name of the bar! It's mine! Well, mine and about a million New Yorkers.

"Smith's Bar" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I just got back from a three-week painting trip in New York. I took a workshop with Karin Jurick the first week, and then, because I had my paints and supplies with me, I actually continued to paint for a little over a week--until I had to stop to let the paintings dry. I didn't want to carry an easel around New York and set up somewhere--painting is kind of messy, so clean-up is awkward, and the people keep moving around! But I did work from photos, using the fire escape in my apartment as a studio. Bliss!

This is Smith's Bar in Hell's Kitchen, on 8th Avenue around West 44th Street. I just loved the neon sign.

When I go to New York, I always visit my publisher, not because I really need to, but just because it seems like an author-ly thing to do. They recently moved to an office on Varick Street, just below Greenwich Village. The view from their building is amazing. I love all of these rooftops, and of course having the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in the distance is not bad, either.

"St. Mark's Place" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I'm on a real New York kick right now. In 3 weeks I'm headed there to take a painting workshop with Karin Jurick, a painter whose work I absolutely love. I'm still working from photos from last year's trip, but expect to see a lot more when I return in June! I'm still debating whether or not to take an easel. It's not required for the class, but I figured that as long as I'm going to all the trouble to pack my paints and other supplies, I might as well bring and easel and paint in the park a few times.

This is the corner of St. Mark's Place at Cooper Square. St. Mark's is a lively little street that is very crowded with cheap trinket shops, but there's also a few great little places to eat there. It's a street I walk down a dozen times whenever I'm in the city. I always find something worth painting there.

At last--the pulp mill painting is up on eBay! This painting went into our 2010 calendar and also hung in Eureka Books' pulp mill art show, where artists all over Humboldt County contributed their paintings of the pulp mill. It's part of the landscape; we all get around to painting it eventually.

I sat in the Sazerac Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans one night, drinking Sazeracs (what else?) and sneaking photos of the gorgeous cocktail bar. I'm always drawn to these beautifully-illuminated bottles behind bars--and not just because of what's in them! Expect to see more of these in the future.

And by the way, the Sazerac Bar makes a pretty nice Ramos gin fizz, too.

It wasn't until the sun started to go down and the lights on the buildings came up that I really started to see some interesting possibilities. The farmers market! I always take my camera AND my canvas bag! This scene actually took place last fall, on the last day of the farmers market, when everyone had big displays of Brussels sprouts and squash for the Thanksgiving feast.

"Pulp Mill" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

This one is not going on eBay--it's going in the pulp mill show at Eureka Books this weekend. The pulp mill is such a fixture in our landscape, sitting out on the edge of the bay, that every artist seems to get around to painting it eventually. The mill's future is uncertain at this point--it's been bought, sold, closed--and remains idle right now while discussions continue about its future. You might think that we would all hate having such an industrial factory on our shoreline, but the fact is that Eureka is a timber and fishing community, and we're used to seeing evidence of the "real work" that goes into producing fence boards or crab cakes.

And we thought that a bookstore would be the perfect place to hold the show. After all, pulp gets made into paper, and paper gets made into books. It looks like we'll even have a papermaking demonstration going on in the store, using actual pulp from a mill like this one.

The show opens during Arts Alive on Saturday March 6 from 6-9 pm, at 426 Second Street in Old Town, and runs through the month of March. You'll see other Lost Coast Daily Painters work in the show, as well as truly fine paintings from many of Humboldt's best artists. Hope to see you there!

"Limes" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

Gin & tonic, anyone? Limes are great fun to paint; they are every possible shade of green all at once. Tricky but worthwhile. Also, they make me think of summer, which is never a bad thing. We are gin drinkers in this house; as a result there are usually some limes around to paint!

"Three Pears" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

More pears! These were fun to do. It's sort of tricky to get behind the light source like this--it means that you're mostly looking at the side of the pear that's in the shadow, where the colors are more muted--but it was a fun challenge.
