Scrub Jay

Sold
Oil on 5x9" panel. Jays are so beautiful. A few years back my husband and I raised a jay that had fallen out of his nest. We were camping and on our first day plop out of the tree he came flopping around on the ground, it was not long before a raven began circling. I thought to myself I can do this, we have the time. So we did. It was six weeks on the Trinity river painting and being new new parents. Our scrub Jay friend was male, we named him Juno because the month was June. In the end it was hard to leave him but we knew he would be fine when he started bringing friends by and sharing his food. For photos, click: Juno. This painting is not Juno but what he would look like at full maturity.

  1. What a sweet story. I didn't know the history behind your Juno paintings. This guy looks like an emperor overseeing his domain!

  3. Thanks you guys, we sure blast with that bird. The males are very serious about their domain, every morning around 6am. The local mature males made their rounds, we called them "Screamers" one morning they attacked Juno and Stock jumped out of bed and ran out to let them know who's domain they were in and they left us alone after that.
