I'm down in the San Bernadino Mountains at a family summer camp this week. I used to come to this camp a couple times a year as a child. It was a place where people knew me, a home away from home. Our family moved around a lot. So coming back to this camp was really important to us. Now I'm an adult, parent returning for the first time in years. This is a portrait if my niece. She is a younger sibling like myself. I saw a contemplative look in her eye that reminded me of how I sometimes felt, trying to figure out who my friends were going to be, while my older sister quickly found her clique.
