'Black Sands View' pastel by Ralphie Hendrix

Over at Shelter Cove, the powers that be have built a nice easy trail down to part of Black Sands beach. It was quite difficult to get down to this portion of the beach. Now it’s very easy and pleasant curling back into a small canyon before turning back to the beach. As you turn, this is the view walking out onto the actual beach.

'Glass Bowl with Garlic' by Rachel K Schlueter

Oil on 6"x6" panel.
Sometimes working in the kitchen I see something that makes me think it would make a nice little painting and that is usually how they start.
After the terror of the challenge is overcome, I am always surprised how much I enjoy painting still life scenes.

'Storm Break' by Stock Schlueter

Oil on 9"x12" panel.
"Storm Break" is from a Plein Air painting trip to the coast of Northern California around Sea Ranch. A group of us rented a house together for several days. It started out with a beautiful sunny day. Then a storm rolled in and it poured. I could see it was going to break off so I chanced it and took my gear out and set up. I dodged rain drops for a while but it let off enough to finish. I always like the beginning and ending of storms. along with the drama of light I feel the energy as well.

Amaryllis, Pansies and Orchid by Jim McVicker

I first painted this back in 2006 as a still life with Amaryllis.
It also had the small blue vase sitting on the table. The painting
spent a couple of years at a gallery. When I brought the painting back
to my studio I realized it did not work. So, I re-worked it with the
elements as they were and only became more discouraged. That's when
I added several other flowers and objects and pushed the painting into
another direction. I was either going to make it work or destroy it.
I think it became a very interesting painting that now works. It will
be on display along with two other small still life paintings at the
Sewell Gallery in Eureka for the month of February. Arts Alive
is Saturday Feb. 2nd. 6 to 9pm  16x12 oil on linen

'River Shoreline Viewed from Above '

A couple of friends and I took a walk along a Northern California River during a summer afternoon. Eventually the path moved to higher ground thereby offering a view from above. The sight of the water meeting the shoreline, the transition of colors and shadows interacting through the tree branches, inspired me to retrieve my art supplies from the car and paint.
Oil on a 16x12 panel.

'Benbow Color' Pastel by Ralphie Hendrix

In the late fall which happens to be my favorite season besides winter, the color of the trees and grasses down at Benbow are just extraordinary. When you look very deeply into shadow, you can see so much color. In the early morning as the sun casts its light on us while creating these deep shadows that are so elusive, You must paint quickly to capture both light and shadow before it changes before your eyes. This is a reality that I have a problem with when I paint plein air.

'Snow and Sunlight' by Jim McVicker

John Crater and I spent the day up in the mountains painting
the stunning snow and mountain landscape this past Tuesday.
We could see the Trinity Alps and Mt. Shasta in the distance
from where we were standing. It was a great day to be alive and
painting. Oil on canvas on panel 12x16

'Two Busy Pigeons' by Rachel K Schlueter

SOLD
Oil on 6"x6" panel.
Another in my new series 'Pigeons on post ST.'
Painting on small format is very exciting! I love squares too. There is a balance and solidity to the shape that evoke feelings of equality and stability and art. Completing a painting in one pass or alla prima is also really enjoyable, the work tends to have a spontaneous flow to it that feels loose, slightly rushed yet cohesive and complete.

'Cheers!' Pastel by Ralhpie Hendrix

Speaking of my daughter, here she is painted by me but not so well. I don’t have too much luck painting figures or portraits. I believe that my lack of interest in the subject of the human body might have something to do with my ineptitude. My interests lie more in the animals/landscape department. She’s enjoying a “dirty martini” here, whatever that is. Personally I’ll stick with my beer.

'Winter Rose' by Theresa Oats

This rose blossomed in our back yard during the recent rainstorm.  I clipped the stem and painted it as it was back lit by my studio window and lit from the side by another window.  I worked on it from life on a 7x5 inch prepared panel
for two days.  The rose didn't change because it's light source remained constantly grey due to our recent grey day weather.
I plan to include this in a my show at the Sewell Gallery this coming May.

'Bath' pastel by Ralphie Hendrix

My daughter had this wonderful Australian Sheep dog named Yater. He was the absolute best dog in the universe. And here we see my granddaughter giving him a bath which was the most awful deed in the world ever perpetrated on a poor dog. He would fight you until the first drops hit, then he would resign himself to the duration. I didn’t quite paint this one as good as I thought I could. But I did catch the resignation on his face.

Painted from a series of photos I took about ten years ago in San Francisco. I enjoy watching birds and this morning was one of those rare sunny days in SF. The Pigeons were perky and visually glorious against the painted cement and tile surfaces.

'An Actress as Cleopatra' by Arthur B.Carles Jr. by Theresa Oats

While I was working on a painting of cleopatra my husband Jim gave me a greeting card that featured this image of the Queen of the Nile by a painter named Arthur B. Charles titled 'An Actress as Cleopatra'.  The actress posed in 1914 and happened to be Mercedes de Cordoba, Mr. Charle's wife. .
I painted this image (based on the the greeting card) in oils on 8x10 panel for a friend who has also been supportive of my work through out the years and just recently sent a book about the latest discovered artifacts relating to Cleopatra.

'January 3, 2013' by Jim McVicker

This was painted from the deck of our studio's. I'm looking south
across our property toward our neighbors home. Our donkey, Henry,
at one point was standing within my view. I started to paint him, but
he moved and the sheep walked into the picture. He stood still just
long enough to paint him in and then wandered the pasture. He was not
feeling well and died that night. We think he was close to 13 years old
and we called him Sheepster.  I buried him in the pasture.

'Abby' pastel by Ralphie Hendrix

This sweet dog Abby, belongs to one of my nieces. While I was visiting them, I was quite taken by the playfulness and good manners she has. I immediately fell in love and wanted to paint her cute face. This was the result.  Painting animals can be quite challenging and yet when you capture a special look or pose, you know you won your challenge.
