St. John’s Wort #2 by Andrew Daniel

In my previous painting of this St John's Wort bush, I had used a lot of the painters logic that I used to use as an abstract painter, but in the end had a painting that looked very similar to my source, so I thought that maybe I should try another that didn't go through so many stages along the way. This piece feels more clear and direct, but perhaps the drama has been reduced as well. Sometimes it is good to look at an idea from several angles, trying to work out the best approach.

Last summer I got to go camping in the Siskiyou Wilderness with Rick Tolley and John Crater. We spent one of the days painting views of Doctor Rock. I liked how the formation rose up from this tree covered mountainside.

I sure enjoy painting on those heavily grey mornings. The is a mysterious and solem peace that pervades the landscape. Especially standing at the edge of the continent looking out over the cold ocean.

I was taken by the stoic expression on my daughters face so I wanted to frame it in a delicate lavender to inhance her quiet beauty.
