Pulp Mill on Humboldt Bay painting by Andrew Daniel

Pulp Mill on Humboldt Bay by Andrew Daniel
oil on wood 5" x 7"(13cm x 18cm)

It seems like, whenever I go to the Arcata Marsh to paint, my first compulsion is to look out across the bay to the pulp mill and the bridges. The forms seem as if they were shaped out of fog. Some day I will do a larger piece. Here is a study I made of the scene.

  1. love the foreground-that loose brushwork is magical.

  2. No smoke in the smokestack since it closed. I always looked to see what the wind was doing... Now I look to the power plant for wind direction.

  3. I remember doing that too! Winds from the south meant a storm was coming!

  4. I can see this as a larger painting of great mood and atmosphere.
