RECEDING FOG OVER COASTAL PINES, by Kathy O'Leary

This original oil painting is from a recent trip to California's Mendocino coast. I saw these beautiful old coastal pines standing on a hill with the grey and pink fog floating over the far hills and knew it was a scene I wanted to paint. SOLD

"Humboldt Fog" by Linda Mitchell

5.5" x 7" oil on board
BUY IT NOW: $175
email me at linda703@sbcglobal.net to inquire.

I painted this one from one of many photos I took the other night on the Madaket cruise. The Madaket is this old boat that's been operating on Humboldt Bay for around a hundred years. Bill and I like to go on the 5:30 cocktail cruise, mainly because it's a bargain at ten bucks a person. Anyway, we decided to take the cruise the other day because it was a warm and gorgeous day, but by the time the boat left the dock, the fog was rolling in with a vengeance. It was a damp and cold cruise, but the fog was quite lovely.

"Fruit Stand, First Avenue at 7th Street" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I think there's something great about owning a painting of a very specific place you know well. So I hope this painting will go to someone who is very familiar with the New York's East Village, right around First Avenue and 7th St, near Tompkins Square Park. There's a grocery store on the corner with a blue awning around it, and under that awning is this display of fruit and vegetables. In fact, if you go to Google Maps and choose the street view, you'll see a photo of it.

This painting is on 1/2 inch-thick wood panel, 5 x 7 inches, ready to frame or hang unframed. These 1/2 panels have dovetail slots in the back to allow you to hang it on a nail with no extra hardware and no frame. HOWEVER--the artist in her carelessness painted it upside down, which means that the nice dovetail slot is on the bottom, not the top, of the back of the painting. Do not let this deter you! Any simple picture-hanging hardware can be mounted right on the back. The sides are painted black.

SOLD.

STROLLIN' ALONG ON ANTELOPE FLAT by Susan Fox SOLD

"Strollin' Along on Antelope Flat" 8x10" oil on canvas- I enjoyed watching this big bull bison who I photographed in Grand Teton National Park a few years ago. He was walking in a straight line towards a destination that only he knew, as many of these older bulls seem to do.

VALLEY COTTONWOODS, by Kathy O'Leary

This original oil painting is of a scene I passed on a beautiful summer afternoon with cottonwoods standing tall above the Eel River Valley pastures near Ferndale, California. Ferndale is a major dairy community situated near the mouth of the Eel River, on California's north coast. This painting is 8 x 10 on linen covered panel. SOLD

TOMALES EUCALYPTUS, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

I painted this scene from a trip I took last year painting and photographing in the Tomales Bay region of California's north coast. Like most bodies of water the light around Tomales Bay provides an additional sparkle to light of the surrounding landscape. This oil painting is 8 x 10, on canvas covered panel. SOLD

"Yellowstone National Park: Sky View" by Linda Mitchell

8" X 10" oil on board
BUY IT NOW: $175.
email me at linda703@sbcglobal.net to inquire.

Here's another one from our trip to Yellowstone National Park last fall. Skies were a major source of inspiration for me - probably because they were so different from the skies here on the coast - but there was much more to be inspired by. The geothermal features, the diverse landscape, the wildlife -- there really is no place on earth like Yellowstone. I can't wait to return and definitely can't wait to see the upcoming Ken Burns documentary series on the National Parks!

"Slanted Speakeasy" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

So here's something you just have to know about Humboldt County. There are no straight lines here. Nothing stands upright. Perfect right angles? Forget it. A doorway that is actually the same shape as the door you've bought to hang in it? Doesn't exist.

Try setting a marble down on the floor anywhere in my house. It will roll. Fast. In the direction of my sinking foundation.

Now try to get an easel to stand up straight on a crooked floor, and then get your reference photo to stand up straight on the little board it's clipped to, and then try standing up straight yourself and actually putting squares and rectangles inside of other squares and rectangles in a way that is somewhat geometrically correct.

This is all an elaborate defense of the fact that this painting, of a crooked doorway on a slanted street in the East Village, is itself crazily crooked and weird. I swear I didn't see it until I photographed it and looked at it on my computer screen, where squares are squares and rectangles are rectangles.

I called it "Speakeasy" because it may or may not be the entrance to one of New York's many lovely hidden bars and lounges. I loved the bare bulbs and all those rich mysterious reds. I certainly want to go in there and have a drink. But now I think "Slanted Speakeasy" may be a better name for it. Nothing in New York stands perfectly upright, either.

Anyway. Buy it now for $40. Shipping is $5 in US or $10-15 international. Post a comment if you're interested or email amy at amy stewart dot com. This is 8 x 10 inch on panel. Cheers!

Lost Coast Daily Painters Go to Shasta!

These paintings are available for sale at the
"Shasta Sojourn" exhibit.

Check out this great story in the Eureka Times Standard about our recent trip to Shasta.

For six years, a group of North Coast artists has gathered to spend a week together in nature and create, bonded by a shared loss and the joy of discovery.

The group's new show, “Shasta Sojourn: Paintings, Drawings and Photographs by Six Women Artists,” is on exhibit this month at the Upstairs Art Gallery in Arcata.

A public reception for the artists will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday during Arts! Arcata at 1063 G St. inside Umpqua Bank. A trunk show for Eureka weaver Nancy Kennedy, who makes handwoven rugs and scarves, will also take place that evening.

Included in the exhibit are plein air paintings and photographs by Becky Evans, Judy Evenson, Carrie Grant, Linda Mitchell, Kathy O'Leary and Theresa Oats.

In June, the women gathered for a week-long trip to Mount Shasta where they captured lavender fields, lupine prairies, alpine lakes, rivers and, of course, mountains."

Read the rest here.

VINE SHADOWS, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

The shadows cast by rows of grapevines in a Napa vineyard inspired this painting. The dried red leaves and grape twigs under the vines offer a wonderful complement to the greens and blues. This is 8 x 10 on canvas covered panel. SOLD

SUMMER OAKS, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

This scene of oak covered hills came from recent travels through the oak woodlands of Northern California. The gold and orange of the grasses were a great foil for the increasingly blue oaks as the eye moved back toward the horizon. This painting is 8 x 10 on canvas covered panel. SOLD

"Rainy Day in Soho" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

I love it when it rains in New York because the umbrellas come out--great curvy colorful shapes against the geometry of the city. And you get those wonderful reflections on the streets and the sidewalks.

This is a little one--5 x 7 on half-inch thick board, with a slot in the back so you can hang it on a nail with no extra hardware.

RANCH SUMMER SHADOWS, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

Passing through ranch lands near the Napa Valley in Northern California, I found these large beautiful trees shading a barn partially hidden behind a huge hay stack. With the Oak covered hills as a backdrop it was such an iconic California ranch scene I just had to paint it. This paintng was done on an 8 x 10 canvas coverd panel. SOLD

VINEYARD PALM TREE, Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

I found this beautiful vineyard in bright morning light on a recent trip to the Napa Valley wine country. The single stately palm was an interesting vertical shape constrasting the horizontal line of the field and the background hills, while repeating other vertical shapes of the scene. A fun discovery. It is painted on an 8 x 10 canvas covered panel.

"Fifth Avenue from 59th" by Amy Stewart--SOLD

Here come the New York paintings! I took this from the window of the incredible apartment we had for our last trip to New York. Right at the corner of 59th St and Fifth Avenue, with windows looking out over Central Park, the Plaza Hotel, and of course Fifth Avenue, straight down to the Empire State Building. In an apartment like that you don't need art on the walls, because Manhattan is itself an ever-changing and ever-fascinating work of art.

More to come. But I gotta say, so far this is my favorite of the batch.

It's 8 x 10 inch oil on board, ready for framing.
