"COASTAL PRAIRIE IN MORNING FOG" Oil paniting by Kathy O'Leary

Living on the north coast of California I find many scenes like this, especially in winter and early Spring. I love the subtleties that coastal fog can bring to a landscape, particularly when the sun is just beginning to break through. Painting this coastal prairie allowed me once again to explore color and light in the more muted tones and values of a tonalist pallet. This painting measures 8 x 10, and is done on panel. SOLD

Three Roses by Frances Kuta

Recently I bought a bouquet of roses at the grocery store, mixed colors of pink, white, orange, yellow. I set them up in this still life, painted it then put the roses in a vase. They continued to open and stay beautiful longer than I ever hoped. Everyday they greeted me as I entered my studio....looking prettier than the day before. 8" x 10" oil on linen panel.

Pulp Mill on Humboldt Bay painting by Andrew Daniel

Pulp Mill on Humboldt Bay by Andrew Daniel
oil on wood 5" x 7"(13cm x 18cm)

It seems like, whenever I go to the Arcata Marsh to paint, my first compulsion is to look out across the bay to the pulp mill and the bridges. The forms seem as if they were shaped out of fog. Some day I will do a larger piece. Here is a study I made of the scene.

"FRIENDSHIP" by Alicia Tredway

SOLD

This 9 x 12 inch oil painting will be in the Japan Animal Rescue Project. These cats were friends and loved by me and both lived 16+ years. It is a very special painting to me. They were taught to stay off the bed but it never caught on, especially when the bed was un-made which was quite often. This painting was a 2009 September Finalist in the National Raymar Contest. The judge was Mike Mao.

"MENDOCINO JUNE" by Alicia Tredway

                                                                  SOLD

This 9 x 12 inch oil was started plein air last June and finished today in the studio from photo reference.
I'm painting from the graveyard on the hill looking down on the houses. The sun is high and the fog beginning to burn off. The distant trees are just emerging. It's a great place to paint...the grounds are well kept.....and as you can imagine it's very quiet. A lovely group of women tend to the upkeep. There is heavy palette knife work throughout. Painted on a Raymar panel. To learn more or

Fire Escape by Theresa Oats

During wild fires in our mountains and forests I wonder how the animals are faring,
wether they're separated from mates and young, if they're able to escape disaster.
I started this painting during our most recent fires and put the finishing touches on
after hearing about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

I painted this with oils on an 18x11 prepared panel. For more information or if you're

"WINTER MORNING ON THE COAST", Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

This painting was done after a recent morning drive around our Northern California coast. This spot is just south of a small coastal village called Trinidad. It was the soft atmospheric sunny morning looking through the sculptural shapes of the trees to the rocks beyond that caught my attention. Like most late winter scenes on our far north coast, the colors and light are muted and show everything in much closer tones/hues than found later in the season. This piece is 8 x 10, and done on panel.

Portrait of Kristen by Frances Kuta

Kristen is a local beauty that I saw and thought..."oh...she would be so much fun to paint!" In fact I asked if she would sit for us gals in the Representational Art League and she agreed. You can see this painting of Kristen and several others at Studio S this coming Arts Alive April 2nd.
11" x 14" oil on canvas Raymar panel.

Allen Marsh painting by Andrew Daniel

Allen Marsh oil painting on wood 5"x7"(13cm x 18cm)
I had just a short bit of time to finish this little piece. It was surprising how much could come through in the rush. Painting quickly often works out well for me, but it is difficult, because there is always a temptation to over refine things and get meticulous. This is one of the first times that I tried to get the distant houses in the background. It's a fine line to walk, not putting in too much detail back there...

If you would like to find out more about this piece or others, check out my Etsy Shop.

"OAK CREEK CANYON" By Alicia Tredway

On a lighter note....this is a wonderful area in Arizona up in pine country.  I was struck by the size difference between my son and his daughter and the massive boulders.  These huge rocks were wonderful colors of pinks and turquoises.  10 x 8 inches oil on canvas panel.  To bid CLICK HERE

"EEL RIVER AFTER STORM" by Alicia Tredway

I took an umbrella and walked down to the river to see how big it was since we've had so many storms.  It was huge....the center island you see here was gone and I couldn't get down very far.  This is painted from a photo reference I took last year.  The mood, atmosphere and colors were the same so it was easy to paint from the photo.  It is oil on canvas panel 8 x 10 inches.  For more info or to bid CLICK HERE

Rose in Full Bloom by Theresa Oats

I painted near my studio window on a 7x5 inch prepared panel in wet into
wet oil paint(alla prima). This prolific rose grows on an eight to nine ft. bush against the
outside wall of our studio building . About the 3rd day of it's bloom the petals begin to vary more in their color. They also develop more personality in the process.
If you are interested in bidding the minimum bid is $99. the "buy it now" price is $125.

Little Doll by Frances Kuta

I've painted this little doll a couple times....this time I posed her so she would be "looking" right at me. Even though she is just a doll I felt as if she were coming to life as I sat there and painted her....it was a strange experience...but fun! 12" x 9" oil on canvas Raymar panel CLICK HERE if you would like to bid on this painting.

"FINAL POSE" by Alicia Tredway

This was the final pose after many more rigorous ones.  Modeling is a rough job and I appreciate what they go through for us.  I really like back views because if the model is uncomfortable (they usually are at some point) I am blissfully unaware of it because the face is hidden.  This piece is 5 x 7 inches oil on canvas paper.  To learn more or to bid on eBay CLICK HERE Ended

Good Reading by Theresa Oats

At our life/painting group our model was engrossed in reading on an aqua blanket as a warm light shone down on her. The weather was cold and grey outside, warm and bright inside.
We worked in contented silence as rain tapped on the window.
Painted in oils on prepared canvas paper mounted on wood. 16x 19 1/2

'OAK KNOLL - NAPA" oil painting by Kathy O'Leary

This is a scene from a trip to Napa last summer. I love to encounter the 'heritage' oaks that are found throughout the hill country of California. Becoming rarer, they are usually large and twisty creating wonderful sculptural shapes. This hill fairly glowed in the morning light at the north end of the Napa valley. I played with color and a variety of brush strokes as I tried to render the feel of the scene. this painting is 8 x 10 and is done on panel.

At A Glance by Frances Kuta

I originally painted this model in 2006 as a beginner studying with Vanessa Lemon at Studio 2nd St. in Encinitas, Ca. They always had the best models and lighting. I didn't do a very good job back then...so I decided to try again using the photo of this extraordinary model. I am much happier with this result and will enter this painting in the upcoming RAA Spring show....hope i get juried in :) 14" x 11" oil on Raymar canvas panel

"GEESE" by Alicia Tredway

While painting with a group of women from the Southern Humboldt Art Association at a farm in  Kneeland, I couldn't ignore these magnificent creatures.  They are beautiful to look at and the noise they were making was unbelievably loud.  A nesting pair was just to the left in the bushes.  This is painted from a photographs and sketches.  10 x 8 inches oil on canvas panel.  To learn more or to bid on eBay

Living Room Drums by Theresa Oats

My husband and I visit a friend who's a musician. I painted these drums from life over
several sessions with open acrylics on a pre- gessoed 9x12 panel.
The ambiance of the room, rhythmic position of the drums in relationship to each other
and their reflection in the mirror were the inspiration for this painting. Although this piece has sold I wanted to share it on the blog.

Fishing Boats, oil by RK Schlueter

Click to bid
Original oil on 9"x12" panel "Fishing Boasts" was completed my first day out with our plein air painting group in La Penita, Mexico 2011. This beach scene was just down the road from where we stayed. My husband, Stock enjoyed watching the fishermen launch their boats early in the morning, he was the only other person on the beach so early, he was painting and often lent a hand, he soon became acquainted with many of the fishermen, there was mutual respect between them, for hard work, long hours and commitment to an art form that fed the body and soul. Thank you for visiting.

"MISSION BELL", Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

I've been thinking about buildings, as I have become involved with Arcata House Artists Guild (which works on providing transitional homes for homeless families). Artists in the Guild are commissioned to paint a client's house. The artist then shares the commission with the guild. So here is my building.

I love the architecture and texture of the stucco and brick buildings of the early Spanish settlers in Calif. and areas of the South West. California's missions are well preserved examples. I painted this, on location, at San Juan Capistrano. This is done on panel and measures 9 x 12. SOLD

"SPRING FIELDS - SONOMA", Oil Painting by Kathy O'Leary

This is a scene from a Spring trip I took through Sonoma, a major grape growing and agricultural region of Northern California. I loved the contrast between the field of wild mustard and the dark backdrop of the Eucalyptus trees. After Winter I'm usually tired of the cold and damp, and look for landscapes to paint that say Spring has arrived. This one says it all. This painting measures 9 x 12 and is done on linen panel. Farm with Mustard Field paintings by Andrew Daniel

Farm with Mustard Flowers
Oil in Wood 8" x 8" (20cm x 20cm)

Field of Mustard Flowers
Oil on Wood 5" x7" (13cm x 18cm)

I have been interested in this mustard field every year as I walk by it. This year I was able to get out and paint it a couple of times. I hope to get out there more and maybe do a larger piece. I tend to be attracted to yellows, I guess....

For more information on these two pieces, check out my Etsy Shop.

Mom's Bean Pot by Frances Kuta

I did this painting from a live set up at a Qiang Huang workshop I attended. I love this pot as my mom had one just like it. I like the looseness of it. I used the biggest brush I could control and painted quickly...but slowed down in areas that needed precise shapes. 8" x 10" oil on canvas panel. If you would like to bid on this painting please CLICK HERE.
